Album Reviews | Boney - $3

On their hard-hitting and dynamic debut EP $3, Boney pummel and thrash from every conceivable angle. The Chicago based noise-punk duo experiment with various synth tones and rhythms to create a disorienting yet cathartic listening experience. Each track takes the EP into a new, dark, and chaotic direction, and each is as rewarding as it is punishing. “joi” sets the tone of the album with sharp guitar riffs and coarse vocals over an urgent full throttle drum beats. "$3" continues the depravity with a warbling background synth accompanied by unpredictable war drums. “i not/ i” is the most sonically interesting track, beginning with stop/start rhythm and lo-fi croons before moving into piercing then pulsing synths and bloodcurdling vocals over a synth-punk breakdown. The outro, “gimp”, is a slow burning barn burner that sounds like the repressed memories of a smashed fun house mirror. Boney succeed in crafting a diverse and visceral array of musical experimentation. After listening, neither my ear drums nor the hairs on my neck will ever be the same.
