Pop Perfection with Sky Ferreira
Article by Josie Stahler
Who can sell out Metro on a Wednesday night other than Sky Ferreira? The indie sleaze icon played a short and sweet set at the staple Chicago venue on the U.S. leg of her winter tour.
The crowd waited patiently for Ferreira to come on. Her show, set to start at 7:30PM, didn’t begin until 9PM. Despite the wait, fans were eagerly chatting and enjoying the ambiance Metro had to offer.
Sky stepped out onto the stage like a dream, wearing a long coat as if she had just come back from a walk in the rain. She started her first song, only to run into a tech issue. Her nonchalance put everyone at ease, walking back off stage and then returning once everything had settled. She opened with her track, “Boys”, a cute song about finding the one. She proceeded to play several songs off her debut album, Night Time, My Time, an energetic synth-infused work that defined the days of pleated skirts and MySpace. “You’re Not The One” especially stuck out as Ferreira was joined by fans screaming the chorus. Anyone in their 20’s can relate to the message of late night thoughts and wanting someone, but not feeling wanted back.
Along with picks from her full-length album, Ferreira performed earlier tracks off the Ghost EP like “Lost in my Bedroom” and the popular “Everything Is Embarrassing." She even played her latest single, “Don’t Forget” an amped up 80’s feel track that’s been a long time coming. One thing about Sky is her ability to maintain a specific sound ten years down the line while still feeling new.
Ferreira wandered about the stage, her iconic blonde hair moving in wispy waves as she performed. On multiple occasions she found her way to the crowd, holding hands with excited fans and singing to them. The set felt both exciting and deep, coming to a head as she covered ‘Til Tuesday’s haunting and emotional track, “Voices Carry”.
Ferreira thanked her fans for coming and left just as soon as she came. By the end, the audience was begging for more. Sky’s ability to entrance an audience is unmatched.
Sky Ferreira will finish her U.S. tour December 11th and pick back up in March in the UK.
