Brigitte Calls Me Baby Is Our Way Out

Entering Schubas on March 2nd, one could feel the anticipation and excitement amongst the rapidly growing crowd as we waited for the opener to take the stage. We found our way to the front as Midcentury Llama took the stage. Their toe-tapping, energetic music instantly captivated the audience. When they played “She’s Pretty”, the venue filled with voices as the crowd joined in during the chorus. “Therapy” had the audience roaring with laughter as each member of the band interrupted the song with Oedipus Complex-themed jokes, acting as if the crowd were their therapist.

Midcentury Llama left the audience exhilarated and eager for more live music. Thirty minutes later, we got just that. Brigitte Calls Me Baby, made up of singer Wes Leavins, guitarists Jack Fluegel and Trevor Lynch, bassist Devin Wessels, and drummer Jeremy Benshish, took the stage and started their performance with the emotional “You Are Only Made of Dreams”. The hour-long set composed of all their songs off of their timeless debut EP This House is Made of Corners, many covers, including the crowd-favorite cover of “Careless Whisper," and one of their unreleased tracks, “Too Easy." They ended the night in the perfect way with “The Future is Our Way Out”, a song that will make you feel many contradictory emotions: happy for the present, sad that it is ending, and optimistic, yet fearful, about the future.

Brigitte Calls Me Baby’s music is extremely passionate, and when performed live, Wes Leavins’ movements only highlight the desire within the lyrics of the tracks. His use of exaggerated gestures and the mic stand as a prop made emotions contained in the song take physical form, making an intimate environment within Schubas. Needless to say, the crowd felt the way Brigitte Calls Me Baby wanted us to feel, and it was an incredible experience.

It’s no wonder they sold out Schubas the day tickets went on sale. In fact, they added two more shows at Lincoln Hall on June 21st and June 22nd for those who missed out on last night’s performance. This timeless band is only getting started and I cannot wait to see what else they create.
