Waxahatchee Plays Sold-Out Salt Shed

Article and photos by Melanie Cammarano

April 20, Waxahatchee put on an unforgettable sold-out show at the Salt Shed in Chicago.

The opening for the group was Good Morning, a band from Melbourne. High school buddies
Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons formed the indie-alt duo. Good Morning just came out with their
6th album, Good Morning Seven, where they mostly pulled from throughout their performance.
This year marks their 10th together, and to celebrate they’ll tour with Waxahatchee all over
North America. Their goofy stage presence paired with feel-good music makes them impossible
not to fall in love with. Check out their newest album!

When Waxahatchee came on an hour later, she received a very warm welcome. Chicago was
one of the first stops on her North American tour, and we said our thank yous by giving her a
sold-out show.

Born in Alabama near Waxahatchee Creek, Katie Crutchfield coined her American indie music
project Waxahatchee. This project was formed in 2010 following the breakup of her previous
band, P.S. Eliot. Crutchfield’s done it all, lo-fi folk, country with drops of alternative, even some
pop, yet her voice is undeniable. And through it all, we always get a hint of Southern hospitality
through her sweet melodies and poetic lyrics.

Waxahatchee has just come out with a new album, Tiger’s Blood, that Crutchfield is incredibly
pleased with. The album is titled rock/folk/country, a perfect nod to this artist’s range. In
interviews she has said this one is different, she’s felt the creative process for albums has been
pulling teeth, however, this one is completely natural and came out smoothly. This is
Waxahatchee’s 6th album, and she feels she got it right. Throughout her discography, she sings
about her journey with finding soberness, and self-re-discovery as an artist. Tiger’s Blood is all
about finally finding peace, and she hopes to share that with listeners. It’s safe today we all got
to experience that Saturday evening, and we were lucky enough to hear the entire thing. You
can take a listen right here!

Waxahatchee put on an incredible show. The stage was softly lit with warm colors, further
painting the scene of tranquility and peace she wanted. Her unique voice showed a range you
do not hear from many artists. MJ Lenderman covered backing vocals, which perfectly
harmonized with Crutchfield’s, giving us beautiful melodies that made the audience sway. The
performance was interactive, Crutchfield often came to the barricade and sang a couple of feet
away from the audience. A lucky fan even got thrown a Kansas City hat from Katie during the
final encore. Waxahatchee’s performance completely enchanted the venue, what an impressive
show it was.
