Middle Kids Turned Chicago Upside Down and Inside Out
On Sunday evening, the Pilsen neighborhood was alive and bustling as a crowd made its way through the streets of block parties and weekend festivities and into Thalia Hall. Here, Australian alternative indie rock band Middle Kids was putting on a show, giving Chicago a taste of their Faith Crisis Pt 1 tour.
Kicking off the concert was Gordi, a fellow Aussie songwriter, who set the tone for the night with her chill folktronica and witty banter. Paying homage to Cheese the cat and TikTok before hitting the crowd with Way I Go, Gordi gained new fans left and right. The crowd stared in awe as she used a looping technique to build her songs piece by piece, adding a new level of meaning to the lyrics. Her mellow yet powerful sound lingered in the air as cheers erupted from the audience at the end of the set.
When Middle Kids took the stage the cheers got even louder. From the balcony to the opera boxes to the floor, everyone was stoked to see their favorite band perform. Their set was fast paced and exciting. Like a well oiled machine, Middle Kids moved around the stage with flair and finesse playing hits like “Edge of Town” and “Bootleg Firecracker”. The band sounded even better live, adding more emotion to their somber song “Your Side, Forever” off of their newest album. Lead singer Hannah chatted with the crowd in between songs reminiscing on times when the band was much smaller, and giving thanks to the family, friends, and fans who have made their growth possible. Guitarist Miles gave the crowd a laugh with his stylish outfit involving a kitchen apron, and his rockstar jumps. It was clear the band’s strong bond aided in their performance, with a constant rhythm to their actions and vibes bouncing off one another throughout the show. As the concert wrapped up with an upbeat encore, fans gave it their all, bouncing up and down to “Cellophane (Brain)” and “Never Start”. The Middle Kids concert was truly a one way ticket to positive energy and great music, and it’s no wonder they continue to accumulate new listeners with each release and performance. One can only hope that they’ll come back to Chicago soon!!!
