Maude Latour's Sparkling Performance at Metro

On March 16th, Maude Latour lit up Metro in Chicago with a stunning performance of her debut album, Sugar Water. Known for her vibrant, pop sound and captivating stage presence, Latour proved once again why she’s a rising star.

Maude Latour's artistic path is anything but traditional. Born in Sweden to parents who were both traveling journalists, she spent much of her childhood bouncing from cities like London, Hong Kong, and New York. These early experiences not only influenced her worldview but her music as well. Latour began writing songs at 15 and put her first tracks on Spotify at 17. She put out her first EP, High School High in 2018, followed by Starsick in 2019. Her breakout song, "One More Weekend" exploded on TikTok in 2020, launching her into the pop music scene, earning her a deal with Warner Records shortly after. Although she has been releasing music for almost ten years now, she dropped her first album, Sugar Water on August 16, 2024.

Opening for Maude Latour was the equally captivating MARIS, a 25-year-old queer pop artist originally from Montana. Dressed in a red, white, and blue jumpsuit with face paint reminiscent of David Bowie, MARIS stormed the stage with an intense performance, opening with her strong song "Fight." Her friendship with Latour began prior when she caught MARIS opening for a band in Los Angeles — and the connection has only grown since.

Maude Latour emerging on stage was nothing less than a surreal experience. A fully sold out Metro packed from wall to wall began cheering, clapping and jumping as she walked into the spotlight. She entered the stage with a blue jersey bedazzled with a “07” on the front. She opened with her song “Officially mine", which encapsulates the overwhelming, euphoric feeling of falling in love with someone new. As the show continued and tensions began to rise, she eventually ripped off her bedazzled jersey to reveal a sparkling blue costume that reflected the aesthetic of her new album, Sugar Water.

Latour's setlist was filled with more than songs from her most recent album. She traversed her vibrant catalog of captivating tracks that continued to dazzle her fans. Some notable audience favorites that elicited exceptional reactions were “Cosmic Superstar Girl” and “One More Weekend”. One special surprise from her performance included an unreleased song titled "American Girl," which is a reflection on her experiences touring around America as a queer woman. One of the lighter and more adorable moments of the show was when she halted the performance for a bit to act as a matchmaker. She proceeded to ask the single people in the crowd to raise their hands, and to swap numbers with someone around them in the hopes they would find their true love. Her ability to maintain such high energy while engaging with the crowd was nothing short of remarkable.

From the glittering visuals and infectious upbeat energy, Latour’s performance at Metro felt like an exhilarating experience in which the audience couldn't help but feel loved, embraced, and at home.
