In Conversation with ARREIS
Written by Sinead Bane
ARREIS sat down with me in the WLUW studio on Wednesday June 18th, a prelude to her performance that night at Reggie’s in Chicago. On her current tour, she’s performing music from her two albums, Blindside and Vices. Though based in Nashville, ARREIS originally hails from the Chicago area; her Reggie’s performance served as a homecoming show. The pop/rock musician’s discography blends a gritty and confessional songwriting style with high production.
In our conversation, she discussed the difference between the music scenes in Chicago and Nashville music scenes, the challenge of creating a community, and the catharsis of songwriting. ARREIS’s journey is a unique one, beginning songwriting during a year at Columbia College Chicago, she eventually took her act to Nashville, carving out a space for herself in a densely populated musical scene.
During the interview, she then discussed the inspiration and story behind her song Five More Minutes in tandem with discussing the importance of a creative outlet. She spoke about her own musical process, and how it has been influenced by her synesthesia, as well as the experience of seeing herself grow and evolve as an artist in the years since her debut album.
With two full albums currently available for streaming, ARREIS’s lyrically vulnerable rock style is sure to entrance listeners.
